2014 – Bring it, bitches

I was going to do a summation post for 2013, but, frankly, that would have been depressing for me, and boring for you. Suffice to say, on the writing side 2013 has been a colossally poor year, with several major failures to meet deadlines that were, when you get right down to it, entirely my own fault.

However, onwards to 2014!

I am determined that 2014 will not go the same way as 2013.

This isn’t a huge goal, I’ll admit – frankly, finishing a single story would make 2014 a better year than the one that preceded it – but the mantra for this year is ‘Achievable Goals’. Hardly the stuff of legend – Hercules did not perform the Twelve Mildly Challenging tasks – but then, I think to shoot for the stars you have to first build the cannon, and learn how to aim the damn thing.

So, my Achievable Goal for 2014 is:

I SHALL FINISH THE SHIT I START.

That is, of course, the trick to everything – you are only a writer if you actually, you know, write stuff. And by ‘write stuff’, I mean think of a story and write it down, from start to finish. Whether it is any good or not is another matter entirely – you’re still a writer if you are a really bad writer.

So, for now, I’m not so much aiming to be a good writer, as simply to be one at all.

Personal circumstances should make this a bit easier, as we charge headlong towards a new year. The last three months of 2013 were pretty difficult, both personally and professionally. However, both of those problems have been resolved, happily in both cases.

On the work side (I’m not going into the personal stuff – you don’t care, and I don’t feel the need to discuss it with you, fair Interwebs), I’ve actually lucked out – after about eighteen months of wrangling for it, I’ve got a promotion at work, meaning that starting in January I should no longer be doing the work of two or more people. Don’t get me wrong, the job is still going to be busy, and difficult at times, but there will be more people in the team, and consequently more hands to man the pumps when it gets rough.

Plus, I now have my own office, which is rather sweet.

So, like all my blog posts, this is starting to ramble. I’m going to add a few more items to that list of Achievable Goals, because I sadly rely on external motivation and in writing down some aims that might just make them stick:

  • Finish what I start – be it blog posts, stories, reviews, or just the everyday tasks of my life (the bath has been halfway through being re-grouted for about four months now…).
  • Use this place more – I pay for this website, I bloody well should use it. So stay tuned for reviews, musings, and perhaps even updates on progress towards these goals.
  • Read more – 2013 was a terrible year for reading. That will most assuredly change next year.
  • Complain less, act more – self-explanatory, really.

So, thanks for sticking it out to the end on this one – I realise it is entirely self-absorbed, something I will be striving to change.

Anyway, peace out, one and all. I hope this holiday season treats you well.
